Sugar Detox (Again!)

I'm on Day 3 of my latest Sugar Detox and it's not fun. Aside from the cravings, I also have a headache, feel lethargic and unmotivated and am distressingly moody. I just want sugar. A brownie... anything to make this go away.

I keep telling myself that it "this too shall pass" and I wonder... why? Why do I keep putting myself through this? I know why... because once I get through the sugar detox doldrums, I feel great! And as the days and weeks of me feeling great go by... I start to think... I can have a brownie here and there... And then... I am back in a full-blown sugar binge.

So, as I sit here in Starbucks... I ask myself the age old question... when will I learn this life lesson? How many times do I have to come back to this point before I finally "get it"? I would hope that this is the last time. My age, my weight, my family history, my thyroid condition... all tell me that sugar is NOT good for me. So just stop. Let the buck stop here. Let the sugar detox end in March 2023.

Since this is being posted in late October... I can include a post script to let you know how this all shook out in the end. Did I make it my last sugar detox or... am I doomed to repeat this yet again. I certainly hope not because it is quite gross. I'm at the point where I wonder if I am going through some health crisis. I know it's just sugar detox but... sometimes it feels so much more than that. My mood is in the toilet. I can barely get myself motivated to do anything. Blech.

Here's a blurb about sugar withdrawal:

"The symptoms of sugar withdrawal include headaches, decreased energy, an inability to concentrate and mood changes. Although it’s not completely understood why these side effects occur, research shows it's likely linked to the impact sugar intake has on our brain chemistry.

Eating sugar triggers a release of different chemicals, including endorphins - which boost your mood and reduce pain - and dopamine, which is linked to pleasure, satisfaction and reward. Sugar stimulates the brain's reward system and ultimately, it makes us feel good - so we are likely to want to eat more sugary food and drinks.

These kinds of changes can lead to dependence and addiction2. Therefore, giving sugar up may trigger unwanted side effects."

Or how about this one:

"It's during this early "sugar withdrawal" stage that both mental and physical symptoms have been reported – including depression, anxiety, brain fog and cravings, alongside headaches, fatigue and dizziness. This means giving up sugar can feel unpleasant, both mentally and physically, which may make it difficult for some to stick with the diet change."

These little blurbs make me feel slightly better. I can see myself in all of these symptoms... and I just have to make it through the first week before I know I will start feeling better. So... stay the course... and remember this for next time... Sugar Detox is no fun and I really don't want to keep repeating this.

PostScript - October 26, 2023

Yeah... we all know how this sugar detox ended. Another brownie splurge! And once you have one brownie, it is a slippery slope. But as I write this, I am trying something new and different. I consulted ChatGPT (the AI) for some ideas and it actually came up with a good one that I have not tried yet... I'll blog about it in due course.

Another Sugar Detox... Amongst Other Things

Tofu
I know. I've been here before. At least 3 times in the last year. And I'm back at it again. This time with more insight and motivation. Hopefully that will lead to success.

Those who follow the ramblings of this blog will know that I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's - an auto-immune thyroid condition that leads to hypothyroidism - not enough thyroid hormone. It means I need to take a synthetic thyroid hormone to keep my thyroid levels within range. But it's been a bit of a roller coaster trying to keep the numbers within range. Which is frustrating and annoying.

Right now, I'm struggling again with low energy levels, sluggishness, achy joints and anxiety. Fun, eh? Not. I've been doing a lot of reading and researching and... I've learned that these sorts of things often start in your gut. There are some foods that are just not good for auto-immune conditions, but it's hard to pin down because it differs from one person to another. One person might be good with eggs but for the other person, it sends them into a Hashi flare.

Some practitioners recommend something called the Auto-Immune Protocol which, among other things, recommends that you avoid "suspect" foods and focus on "good" foods. So... cutting out things like gluten, soy, legumes, nuts, eggs, dairy, nightshades (tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant), sugar, high-glycemic fruits. It leave a lot of greens and meat to eat. It's a bit extreme... but maybe it's time to bite the bullet.

But then... in reading the list of foods to avoid... I had a bit of an epiphany. I went back to my TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) lab results and discovered something intriguing. Just to clarify, the TSH is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland when thyroid levels are too low. So when the TSH goes up... it means there isn't enough thyroid horomone. Kind of counter-intuitive.

TSH Labs

Let's take a look at my TSH labs - going from 2014 to 2023. I had always put my thyroid issue down to the stress of taking care of my Dad towards the end of his life - 2016-2019. But those labs are all happily within range. There's a bit of up and down, but it's all relatively good.

Where things start to take off is in January 2020 when my partner and I decided to get rid of meat, dairy, and eggs from our diet. We were going whole foods and plant-based. We introduced a lot more legumes into our diet as well as tofu and tempeh (both soy products).

And then... in March 2021, we both went to see a naturopath. I was actually feeling pretty good, but given our vegan diet, she decided to put me on a heavy course of Vitamin D (like 10,000 IU/day - recommended is 600-800 IU) because she thought I might be low in Vitamin D given the vegan diet. She also recommended fish oil (liquid stuff). She told me to avoid gluten but said sourdough bread was fine.

I pigged out on sourdough bread from Cobs Bakery and... well... you see what my TSH did. Turns out Cobs Bakery doesn't do the "right" type of sourdough bread! With increasing doses of synthroid, however, my numbers came back down but then there are these weird blips where it goes up again. That was usually because I slid backwards and thought... I can have "some" gluten! And we continued on our vegan diet.

I eventually ditched the naturopath because I developed other issues - things like oral lichen planus (raw spots inside my mouth). The naturopath thought that was weird and told me to stop taking all of the supplements she had put me on. She said that when I came to her, I was basically healthy and she wondered about all the stuff she had put me on. Brilliant. Paid $$ to get put on supplements and then paid more $$ to be told to get off of them. No more naturopaths.

Personally... I thought it was the fish oil... so I stopped taking that and added salmon into my diet. And my mouth cleared up. Interesting.

Taking Charge

So here we are... my thyroid is screwed up and when I look back at the history of this... I am faced with the dietary change from a regular diet to a vegan diet. Got rid of meat and fish and added soy and legumes and lots of whole grains (most were wheat based - things like farro). If you recall from above, soy and legumes are two of the things on the "avoid" list, along with gluten. Is soy the issue? Is it just the gluten?

I don't know but I've started an experiment. We have agreed to add meat back into our diet - ethically sourced, local chickens and bison. We're already eating eggs and salmon, so we'll continue with that. We are eliminating tofu and tempeh from our diet. And sugar. Sigh. And I'm getting rigid on the gluten. No more chocolate brownies. No more Timmies bagels. Nope. Done. For 3 months. I'm writing this on June 17, so we're looking at end of September.

What will my TSH do? How will my energy levels do? I don't know but it's worth it. Right now, I'm on 100 mcg of Synthroid right now. I'm at the point where I'm tempted to increase the dosage just to feel better but... maybe these dietary changes will do the trick.

I've read enough stories about people taking charge of their dietary eating plans and seeing a reversal in their thyroid labs to know... this is possible. Will it work for me... we shall see. Small steps.

So, every time I go into Starbucks, I think... no brownie (despite it's siren call). It's not worth the rest of it. Just. Not. Worth. It. Period.

The Siren Call of Sugar and Processed Carbs

Every one in a while, I'm not sure why... we go through a bit of a junk food spell. One, or both of us, will cave and crave chocolate.. or sugar... or processed carbs.

Maybe it's because of a "bad" day... or an emotional day... or a hard day or... a good day! Maybe we got a lot done on the house or in the garden and... at the end of the day... we just want something to "reward" ourselves.

I am not sure why that reward has to be sugar but it is deeply ingrained into both of our psyches. Perhaps it's a leftover from childhood... "if you're good, you can have an ice cream". Although it's not ice cream we crave!!

For me... my kryptonite is Ritter sport chocolate bars. If I'm going to have chocolate, don't just give me some generic plain Eat-more (although that will do in a pinch). No, I wand the crème de la crème of chocolates (at least that are stocked in our local grocery store).

And my kryptonite comes in two yummy flavours... Praline... and dark chocolate with hazelnuts. And yes, I heard about the news article that dark chocolate can have high lead and cadmium. Charming. Anyhow... I vacillate between these two chocolates...

I wish I could say that I cold just eat one row of the bar and be done but... no... one row turns into two rows... turns into 3 rows and... well... at that point, you might as well finish it off!!

I'm not sure if the makers of Ritter Sport, with the efficient grid-like pattern of squares, thought that a person could stop with just one square of chocolate... because that is not my experience!!

And yes, I do know that chocolate and processed/refined sugars are bad for me. I know they increase inflammation. I know all these things and yet... there are days where I just want...chocolate.

Oh... and then... there are the salty treats too... let's not leave those out. For me... it is Hawkins Cheezies. None of that Cheetohs crap. No... Hawkins Cheezies are where it's at. They are soooo good... as long as they are cool. There is nothing worse than a warm Cheezie... ick! So crunchy... so cheesy... soooo... just... badly good!

When I spent a year living in the USA, my friends would send me care packages with bags of Cheezies because... gasp... the entire USA does not KNOW what they are missing!! They don't have Cheezies... scandalous, I know. But our big secret! Oh... and they don't have All-Dressed chips either... go figure.

Anyhow... the Cheezies... and then... Ms. Vickie's Sweet Chili and Sour Cream chips... They too are soooo good. And so bad.

While my tastebuds love the salty treats, the inside of my mouth just can't handle it anymore. The sharp edges and the salt just trigger inflammation in there so fast. And so I can only have a few of these before my mouth calls it quits.

I wish my mouth would do that with sugar too. Although... lately, I have noticed that my tongue does not like loads of sugar - like a whole Ritter Sport bar - particularly the praline flavour. It gets irritated and upset with me.

Perhaps it is good to have an internal regulator like that... although I would have to actually listen to my body instead of just munching steadily through a bag of cheezies and a chocolate bar.

Listening to my body is not something I do all that well. It craves water and I ignore it. It dislikes sugar... and I ignore it.

I think that needs to stop. My body and I are a team... so it's best for us to work together. I've been starting by being more attentive to water cravings... so that is one small step.

But when the junk food craving hits... it might be the time to really touch base with my body and see if that craving isn't a cry for something else.

Hashimoto's Fatigue after a Gluten/Sugar Binge

I'm writing this on a Monday morning and I'm dragging my butt around. I have this yucky fatigue that came on me yesterday. All my zip and energy that had been coming back in the week since I gave up sugar... vanished. I was doing so well! What the heck happened?

Well... I think I got glutened.

I know... gluten isn't a verb... but out in the Hashimoto and Celiac Disease world... it is. It describes the fatigue and brain fog that happens when you eat gluten.

And it's a direct correlation to what I ate and drank on Saturday... the day before the fatigue hit me like a brick wall. I had a beer around the campfire as we roasted some sausages at lunch time. And then I went out with a group of colleagues for an appy dinner and... I threw caution to the winds and had another beer (gluten) and then munched on several appies... all of which apparently had gluten.

The lady next to me was only eating the salad and when I asked why... she has Celiac Disease. But can't she eat the yam fries? Nope... because they are all fried in the same oil as the gluten appies... Great. But I thought to myself.. "Ah, it's just a bit of gluten"... and now I am apparently paying the price for this.

I keep bumping up against this and I keep thinking I can have a bit of gluten and be fine. But I don't think so. Every time I do this... I pay the price. My TSH was fine in October 2022, but by January 2023, it was out of range again. Why? Because we went on vacation to Mexico for 2 weeks over Christmas and I ate whatever I wanted... all sorts of things with gluten in them... lots of beer... lots of baked treats. It's a direct cause & effect.

I don't want to face this though! I really don't! It's just too hard right now to admit that I should be eliminating all of these things from my diet:

  • sugar
  • refined foods
  • gluten - wheat, barley, rye and maybe oats (they get contaminated)
  • beer and probably all alcohol (converts to sugar)
  • soy
  • dairy
  • eggs
  • legumes
And those are just the worst offenders. If I cut out the first 4 though... I'd probably see a marked improvement. But I'm really struggling with all of them. The thought of no sugar (ever), no junk food or sausages or bacon (ever), no cake (ever), no beer (ever)... just crushes me.

And I see the impact of all of those foods on me... when I let things slide, I pay the price. I can't keep ignoring that. But it's too hard on my body.

So, it's time to pull up my Big Girl Panties and grab the steering of wheel of my life away from my cravings. I can't keep giving in to them. The cost is too high. The benefits too low.

... Recalculating... Recalculating...

You know how, when you're using GPS... or your phone's map feature... and you're driving... and it tells you to go left and you go right... it then pauses, frowns at you (you can just feel that)... and in this prissy voice says "recalculating... recalculating..." and then gives you a new route? Well that happens in real life too...

Except there's no prissy AI voice to tell you that you've gone off course... and that you need to pause and stop and figure out how to get back on track. There's no voice from the heavens that says "recalculating".

And it's easy to get off track. A few brownies here... a few chocolate bars there... and suddenly you are 5, 8 or 10 lbs off your ideal weight... you know... the weight where 80% of your clothes fit you. Especially your jeans...

For me... it's my jeans... and my belt... that start me muttering that dreaded phrase... "recalculating". All of a sudden, and it really does feel that sudden, the belt no longer fits so well at hole #4... but we are now having to use hole #3... and then, sometimes... it just feels less constricting at hole #2. Uh-oh!!! Recalculating!!!

Or... I'm going through my closet, trying on pants and... a few years ago... I was actually able to slide down into a 12 (or a 32) which was amazing!! I mean... normally I'm a 14/34 but... a 12/32 felt great! But then I went back to a 14/34 and I was cool with that. But now... all of a sudden... those 34s are feeling a bit too tight. Especially when they are fresh out of the laundry! Ugh! I feel like a sausage!!... and then... there it goes again... "recalculating"...

But it's not just the weight thing... there are so many ways to get off course. Like... during the winter months, it's dark and cold and wet and... I don't walk as much as normal. And then as the days get longer, come February and March, I get out walking more and I feel like a total slug.... "recalculating"...

Or I let the meditation habit slip away... cause I'm feeling soooo good! And then the days and weeks go by until final I have a complete meltdown and lament the state of my life and my emotions and... "recalculating"...

I know that if I neglect my daily writing habit... or my daily walk in the forest habit... I can coast for a while without them... getting further and further away from my ideal path... but eventually... I'll have one of those meltdowns.

The thing is... the GPS informs me pretty quick that I am off course with her prissy "recalculating". That doesn't happen in the analogue world. In real life... you don't realize you're off course until you're well and truly lost! It's not like a quick u-turn is going to get me back on the path quickly. Nope... for any of these issues... it's going to require me to put some serious effort and concentrated focus into getting back on track.

When you're driving a car... and you're on the straight stretch... yes, you can take your hands off the wheel for a moment or too... or even for a long moment and the car will just keep going straight. Unless you hit a pothole or a divot in the road. If that happens, all bets are off... But I wouldn't dream of taking my hands off the wheel when I'm on a winding, curvy or pothole-y road...

It's kind of like that in life. Everything is going great!! Life is smooth and straight and... I'll just take my hands off the wheel for a moment. I can ease up on all the habits of my life. I can have a brownie... or skip a walk... or skip some writing... for a day... or a week... But very quickly, I forget that life is not always straight and smooth and a pothole (life event) comes out of nowhere and... boom... I'm off course... maybe even in the ditch!

Soooo... the life lesson here is... don't take your hands off the steering wheel. Pay attention to what is going on in life... maybe a brownie once in a while (once a month) is OK... maybe not. Listen for those whispers of "recalculating"... before it gets to the point where you're lost in the woods and it's a major struggle to get back on track.
